Many elements of this photo stood out to me, which I attempted to recreate. The most notable one is the color, which was a sign of the times. It is black and white but offers just a hint of tan to his face. Since he is wearing a black shirt, this helps his face stand out even more. The next feature is the background. Taken up against the window, the strong light of the sun drowns out the background making the man central to the photograph. The final aspect is his facial expression. He has a soft smile, giving him a friendly, harmless and uncertain demeanor. These elements combine to force the man in the photo to be the main focus. His soft smile and eye level height to the camera give a feeling of sustainability, not that he is too weak or too strong.
The first part of this is to know what we all look like without a face mask. Going forward we are going to see what we can do to turn our selfies into self-portraits by the end of the semester.
